I am involved with a large collaborative project aiming to identify the mechanisms of rabies spread in raccoons to assist in the ultimate goal of eradicating raccoon rabies. My role in the project is to develop genetic profiles of raccoons across the northeastern seaboard of North America to identify mechanisms of raccoon dispersal. Some of the key regions being investigated are the border regions between Ontario and New York as they are separated by large waterways; the degree at which these waterways prevent raccoon movement will be important in determining how best to target vaccination strategies. |

Other Research Interests
In addition to my raccoon research I am involved with the genetic analysis of swift fox, an endangered species in Canada. This species was extirpated from Canada by the 1930's and was re-established in the 1980's and 90's through the release of animals from the US. I have developed genetic markers to assess the feasibility of using non-invasive sampling methods to profile the population to ensure this species has been successful in establishing viable populations on the Canadian prairies.
