Interests My interests can be found primarily within the field of Conservation Biology. I am particularly interested in avian biology and conservation, including behaviour, ecology, biodiversity, genetics and reproductive physiology. Project Outline"High Resolution Genetic Analysis of the San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike (L. l. mearnsi)" The objective of this study is to re-evaluate the genetic status of the San Clemente loggerhead shrike and its relationship to the other Channel Island and mainland loggerhead shrike subspecies. A high-resolution genetic analysis will identify a possible genetic cline between populations of shrikes from San Clemente to the mainland, through the Channel Islands (especially Santa Catalina Island). Assignment tests using microsatellite DNA profiles will determine the genetic origin of individuals sampled from the various shrike populations. This will allow assessment of migration to and from San Clemente Island. In addition to microsatellite analysis, mitochondrial DNA profiles will also be used to compare the levels of genetic variation and population structure. Overall, this DNA analysis will help to assess the potential role of the Channel Islands in maintaining the long-term viability of the San Clemente loggerhead shrike. Successful management of this shrike may require a shift in emphasis from a single-species, single-island approach, to a multi-species, multi-island approach. Supervisor & Committee Members
